The Terahertz Technologies & Applications Summer School (formerly known as the International Travelling Summer School – ITSS) was organized by one of the participating universities or institutes and took place in a different place every year since 1990. In 2020 the summer school was to take place at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), in The Netherlands, and organized by the Research Group Terahertz Photonic Systems of TU/e. We expected around 100 to 150 participants, however, due to the situation caused by COVID-19, the summer school was postponed.
This year, 2021, the issue of the pandemic is not over but we didn’t want to let anyone wait and another year passes by. Thus we decided to hold the event online and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Summer School. Therefore we are organizing the event, for the first time, online, and since traveling is not permitted we appropriately renamed the summer school.
The language of the Summer School is English, and the program consists of lectures presenting the newest achievements in Terahertz technologies and applications. The lectures will be followed by discussions and interactions among students, professors, and industry professionals. The online version will be organized in such a way that it will be interactive for all participants. We will organize virtual visits at companies, group challenges, diverse virtual lab tours, online social events, digital coffees, etc.
Already at the beginning of the Summer School, connections among young researchers will be built during the poster session where participating Ph.D. students can give a brief overview of their research. These connections will be strengthened during group work on the challenge and social events. The group work is based on teams of mixed nationalities and backgrounds. At the end of the Summer School, each team has to present the results of their work and the best poster pitch will be awarded.
